Horse ties like these were used in the 1800's to the early 1900's to tie a horse on the side of the road. This is one of the few remaining horse ties in Downtown Hilo.
Kaipalaoa Landing Wharf - Wharves for transporting passengers and goods on steam boats were built at the foot of Waianuenue avenue from 1863 to 1890. All that's left are remains of the wharves and a lighthouse built later on.
Hilo Farmers Market Developed in 1988 by Richard Rankin, the Hilo Farmers Market started with four farmers selling goods from the back of their truck. Today, there are over 200 vendors selling a range of goods.

He brought back the Hawaiian tradition of Hula previously banned by missionaries. If you have ever seen Hilo's Merrie Monarch, that is dedicated to him. The tradition of Hula is practiced all over the world.
